A gasket is a mechanical seal between two objects, typically used to prevent pressure, corrosion, and natural thermal expansion, contraction, and leakage of pipelines between the two objects. Due to the fact that the machined surface cannot be perfect, irregularities can be filled by using shims. Gaskets are usually made of sheet materials such as padding paper, rubber, silicone rubber, metal, cork, felt, chloroprene rubber, nitrile rubber, fiberglass, or plastic polymers (such as polytetrafluoroethylene). Specific application gaskets may contain asbestos
